People & Pets Road Show - Meadowell 28th & 29th August.
Before the event at the Meadowell Centre in North Shields even opened its doors a queue was well formed with people and their dogs and cats, all waiting to receive either health checks for themselves or a Veterinary examination for their pet.

The event held over two days was a revolutionary idea where leading charities and the North Tyneside Neighbourhood Management Team came together and offered free or subsidised neutering for cats and dogs, free micro-chipping and worm and flea treatment.

Local charities Pawz for Thought, Newcastle Cats Protection, Neighbourhood Management and the RSPCA Inspectorate supplied the volunteers, microchips, free cat neutering vouchers and many goodie bags for the pets, whilst the Dogs Trust supplied the subsidised Dog Neutering Vouchers.

Help was also at hand from Community Police Officers and the North Tyneside Animal Health Inspector who all gave a hand form filling to cope with the rush.
The Road Show was a huge success in the fact that over 60 dogs and 32 cats will be neutered, with the addition of all of those plus approximately a hundred more being micro-chipped over the two days.

All in all it was a huge success, and we the charities would like to extend our thanks to all who participated, especially to MetroVets of Longbenton and Strachan, Tyson & Hamilton who offered their services free of charge, Also a special thank you to those who came along with their pets and made it such an enjoyable, if busy day.

We will be planning more of these events in the near future, including one in the Sunderland area.

Voluntary Vacancies - Maybe There is Role YOU Can Fill?
The Newcastle upon Tyne Branch urgently need the following volunteers

Our recent Volunteering Event on the 19th April brought forward many new people, but most people are interested in fundraising events and Home Visiting, which is wonderful, but without the cats in care to rehome we cant utilise these roles.

Fosterers are what is needed !

Maybe you are put off fostering because of knowledge of commitments, holidays etc., but that need not stop you fostering. Unlike owning an animal, this is not a lifelong commitment. When a cat is taken into our care it has to be kept away from your own pets. So, a spare room or no cats of your own are the main essential for this role. The cat is then given a treatment for worms and fleas ( a simple two minute job ). After that you simply assess the animal by observation and interaction. Then once you have an idea of any problems (dont worry we will teach you how to do this ) you take the animal to a CP Vet, tell them any observations you may have, and the Vet will then check its medical wellbeing, arrange for neutering, chipping and vaccination. After 14 days, if all is well the animal is then up for rehoming. And that doesnt need to be your job, you simply inform the Homing Officer that all is well, and she will arrange for the cat to be transferred to her, when she has space and it will be rehomed from there.
If you have holidays booked etc., your foster cat will be transferred to another fosterer, so no worries there.
If you dont work full time, you could foster litters of kittens, which can be tremendous fun, again, you dont have to deal with the rehoming if you dont want to.
Once a new fosterer feels that this is a role they enjoy and want to continue doing the Branch will consider placing an outdoor pen in the garden, we never do this immediately as the cost to the Branch is thousands of pounds, and we need to be sure a fosterer is dedicated before spending this sort of money.
Transport is a bonus but not essential as we hope to have one or two people who want to transport for us, you would simply ask them if they could take you to the Vet.

So come on ......give it a try !! We so urgently need YOU !

Fosterers
•    Adult Cats – This can be done by people who could be at work full time or part time. Transport and a spare room are essential to this role.
Food and Litter will be provided by the Branch
•    Kittens – This can be done by people who are at home the majority of the working day. A spare room are essential to this role. The role can be seasonal, and a willingness to foster an adult cat out of season would be helpful. Food and Litter will be provided.

Drivers
•    Various driving roles exist within the Branch.
•    We do have a van of our own and an experienced driver with a clean license who can offer regular time during the working day is needed by our shop to help with collections of donated goods. For this role a certain amount of physical fitness is required as goods have to be carried up a flight of stairs for sorting within the shop premises
•    We also need owner drivers who would be willing to assist with the delivery and collection of cats from the various Veterinary Practices we use.  This would  involve collection from the foster home around 8:30am and delivery to the Veterinary surgery, then collection from the surgery around 4pm to be taken back to the Fosterer. Also, a driver could be requested to collect an animal which urgently requires our care, this would involve bringing a cat basket with them, getting the cat signed over to CP and then bringing it to a fosterer.
•    Mileage for own car use would be paid at the standard Branch rate of 20p per mile.

VACANCIES FOR VOLUNTEERS ALSO EXIST IN THE BEDLINGTON & DISTRICT BRANCH ( NORTHUMBERLAND AREA) AND THE GATESHEAD BRANCH SO WHEREVER YOU LIVE WE URGENTLY NEED YOU !

IF YOU WOULD LIKE MORE INFORMATION, PLEASE CLICK THE LOGO LINK BELOW AND COMPLETE THE VOLUNTEERING APPLICATION FORM

WE STILL NEED FOOD FOR THE FERALS, PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN

During the last three years so many of you came to our aid with donations of food, Gift Vouchers & Cash Donations, but we still need your help to continue maintaining these feral cats.

2008 has brought many more feral cats to be monitored by Cats Protection Newcastle Branch, and with them, more pressure to obtain donated food.

Pictured are some of the cats at one of these locations, I cant give the name of the location as there are some sick people out there who would go along just to use them as target practice.  These cats are cared for by a lovely lady called Sylvia, who feeds them daily, and generally sees to their wellbeing. But as you can see there are many of them, and we still need your help to buy food for them. If you can donate some food or a shopping voucher, we would be most grateful.

Donated food can be dropped off at our shop at 164-166 High Street East Wallsend, which is open 10am - 4pm  everyday bar Friday when it closes an hour earlier.

To Report a Lost or Found Cat, you now need to be a member of our Forums,

LOST AND FOUND CATS

We now have a new forum system on our website, and amongst the forums you will find one for lost cats and one for found cats. You can post details of a cat lost or a cat found, on these forums.  You can also upload a small photo of the cat, but to do this you need a web album. The way to do that is to open a free account with a site such as Photobucket, http://www.photobucket.com  and upload your photo to that site, making sure it is no bigger than 800 x 600 pixels. You can manipulate the size of a photo in a photo package such as Paint or any of the software you may have received with your digital camera. You then simply post the link into your posting and the photo will appear. Photobucket does give you simple instructions on how to do this.
This will save this site having to host as many photographs as we currently do. The cost of putting a website such as this one on the web is considerable, so if you make use of this new service, it will actually save us having to increase the webspace we occupy to accommodate photos

You will need to register to use this forum, but dont worry, you wont be asked for personal details, just an email address, user name, and your date of birth. The date has to be given to conform with US security regulations, as they host the forums.

just click the CP Logo below and register to use the forums. You can also join in discussion, ask questions, the forums are yours for your use !

IMPORTANT - Read this if you are considering placing an older cat in care

Those of you who want us to rehome older cats, would you please consider that a cat who has been used to a home, will suffer greatly by being placed into an outdoor pen, imagine how stressful that would be for it, and a cat who is stressed can become very ill indeed. So please try to rehome your cats yourself before placing them in a situation that no matter how good the care is, will possibly make it very ill.

These Cats needs your help !
